Ontario will invest an additional $25 million for the next three years to double its skilled immigration intake along with the previously announced $15 million over three years in the Budget 2022. This initiative aims to overcome labor shortages and promote economic progress in the province.
By 2025, the province will invite a record-breaking number of 18,000 economic immigrants, doubling the previous amount. The Budget 2023 also includes an investment to expedite the processing of newcomer applications and facilitate their entry into the workforce. In addition, the allocated funds will be utilized to bolster the security and IT infrastructure of the system to accommodate present and future demand.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford Stated:
“The Ontario government is prepared to welcome more skilled immigrants to the province to help in building the highways, transit, schools, housing, and hospitals that our growing population requires. We’re doing everything we can to make sure we have the workforce to support Ontario’s development while we continue to address historic labor shortages. It’s all hands on deck.”
Opportunities for new skilled immigration intake in Ontario
There are many opportunities for newcomers with the province’s choice of selecting double as many economic immigrants. Prospective immigrants with the skills and experience the province needs are the subject of the OINP. Individuals who meet the requirements may be awarded a provincial nomination by the Ontario government, after which they can submit an application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada for permanent residency (IRCC).
The new investment in Budget 2023 will expedite the application process and make sure that newcomers to Ontario may quickly start working in their professions. The money will be used to improve security and make other IT modifications so that the system can handle future demand growth.
Over the next three years, Ontario will invest $75 million into the Skills Development Fund to assist workers and job seekers in developing the skills they need to capitalize on new opportunities and advance their careers. Also, the government will contribute $224 million in 2023 and 2024 to a new capital stream of the Skills Development Fund in order to increase access to training centers and train more workers for careers in the skilled trades and other in-demand jobs. Newcomers will receive the training required to succeed in their new occupations due to this investment.
Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is an established path for skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. It is the province’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which enables applicants to immigrate to Ontario with the expertise and experience needed by the province in order to be considered for Canadian permanent residence.
The following streams operate through the OINP’s Expression of Interest System:
- Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker stream
- Employer Job Offer: International Student Stream
- Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream
- Masters Graduate stream
- Ph.D. Graduate stream
