Canadian trucking industry commends Ottawa for assisting internationally trained truckers in immigrating to the country. However, they urge Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to prioritize these much-needed workers further. The current labor shortage in the Canadian trucking industry poses a significant threat to Canada’s long-term economic recovery and stability.
Thus, the trucking industry is calling on the Canadian government to expedite the processing of immigration applications and to remove barriers that prevent internationally trained truckers from entering the Canadian workforce.
“As IRCC and the government of Canada are well aware, the economy and the skills required to sustain it are changing,” said Jonathan Blackham, director of policy and public affairs for the Canadian Trucking Alliance, in a statement.
“The Express Entry program itself is changing as well, with the inclusion of occupations such as trucking that were previously excluded from these types of programs.”
Last month, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said that Canada will launch an additional pathway this summer under the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) to support employers in hiring skilled refugees and other displaced individuals, including for trucking jobs in Canada.
