Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island signed an agreement for internationally educated nurses On May 10, 2024. In a significant move to bolster healthcare resources, Saskatchewan Polytechnic has joined forces with the Government of Prince Edward Island (PEI) to launch specialized programs catering to internationally educated nurses (IENs). This groundbreaking collaboration, announced on May 10, 2024, is set to tackle the pressing need for skilled nursing professionals in PEI while enriching the healthcare landscape across Canada.

The cornerstone of this partnership lies in the implementation of two pivotal programs: the Transition to Registered Nursing in Canada and the Registered Nurse Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Nurses. These initiatives are meticulously designed to equip IENs with the requisite knowledge and competencies essential for seamless integration into the Canadian healthcare milieu.

By embracing a hybrid learning model, these programs afford participants the flexibility to engage with course materials both online and in-person, ensuring optimal accessibility and efficacy. As part of their educational journey, eligible learners from PEI will earn a prestigious Saskatchewan Polytechnic credential upon successful completion, positioning them for success in the National Council Licensure Examination.

The significance of this collaboration extends beyond mere academic pursuits. It represents a concerted effort to cultivate a robust nursing workforce in PEI, thereby fortifying the region’s healthcare infrastructure. Moreover, by nurturing the talents of IENs and fostering their assimilation into the Canadian healthcare fabric, Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the PEI Government are collectively addressing the evolving healthcare needs of Canadians nationwide.

In essence, this pioneering partnership exemplifies a proactive approach toward healthcare enhancement, underscoring the pivotal role of education in shaping a resilient and proficient nursing workforce. As Saskatchewan Polytechnic expands its footprint in PEI through these innovative programs, it paves the way for a brighter, healthier future for communities across the nation.

Health and Wellness Minister Mark McLane stated:

“PEI has a growing population, and we have an aging population. We know nurses are needed to make our healthcare system work for Islanders and we need to help internationally educated healthcare workers get to work faster. This partnership is another step to address the staffing challenges across the province. Together, we can help get much-needed nurses into our health care system so they can help Islanders in need.”
