Ottawa introduced a temporary open work permit policy for PNP candidates

Work permit policy

Ottawa has recently offered a major shift in its new temporary open work permit policy, which will come into force on August 11, 2024, in response to PNPs to strengthen Canadian immigration to improve employment prospects and opportunities for qualified applicants wishing to obtain permanent residency.

What’s New in the Policy?

The new policy permits eligible PNP candidates to apply for open work permit from 11th August to 31st December 2024. This prescribes a temporary solution to help both those, who have job offers or work permits, in order to help people with temporary residence status move to Canada with a permanent residence status. Among the requirements, a support letter from the province/territory must be provided, which has to confirm the person’s membership in an Expression of Interest (EOI) pool.

Why is IRCC pursuing a work permit policy?

This policy is a designed attempt to address the ratio of temporary to the permanent ratio of the citizens in Canada. By enabling PNP candidates to secure open work permits, IRCC hopes to:

  1. Boost Skilled Worker Retention: They now have more secure jobs that assure them to offer their expertise and hence contribute to the nation’s economy.
  2. Streamline the Path to Permanent Residency: This is another approach as it provides a straight-forward path to permanent Residents status for temporary Residents as compared to the complex procedures aforementioned.
  3. Support Provincial Nominee Programs: Since PNP transition policy makes it easy to manage the process, the policy assists provinces deal with PNP candidates in accordance to their labor market needs.

Who is eligible under this new policy?

Under this policy, some PNP candidates may be eligible to apply for an open work permit, so long as the application meets set requirements for one of the following:

  1. Support Letter: Secure a letter from their province or territory verifying their placement in the EOI pool.
  2. Valid Work Permit or Job Offer: Have a valid work permit or have a valid job offer to be eligible to apply for an open work permit.
What This Means for You

This policy is a great avenue for prospective immigrants and PNP candidates, as it will reduce the burden of finding employment and eventually securing permanent residency. If you are one of those skilled workers going through the immigration process, this new policy might become your game-changer.
