On May 9, 2023, the Government of Canada published new instructions for in-Canada study permit applications. The changes were designed to make it easier for protected persons and their families to stay in Canada and pursue their educational goals.
The new instructions allow protected persons and their family members to apply for a study permit from within Canada, regardless of whether they have already applied for in-Canada permanent residence. Previously, protected persons and their families could apply for a study permit if they were in Canada permanent residence applicants.
What is a Study Permit?
Canada issued the study permit, allowing foreign nationals to participate in studies at Canadian-designated learning institutions (DLIs). To study in Canada, the majority of foreign nationals require a study permit. Before applying, make sure you have all the required documents. Applying is a must before entering Canada.
A visa is not what your study authorization is. You cannot enter Canada with it. You could also require an electronic travel authorization (eTA) or a guest visa.
Study Permits Eligibility Requirements from outside of Canada
To be eligible to submit an application for a study permit, you must meet the following requirements:
Acceptance Letter: In order to apply for a Canadian study permit, you must have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Proof of Funds for financial support: You must submit documents showing that you have sufficient funds to pay for your first year’s tuition as well as the costs of living (housing, food, etc.) for you and any accompanying family members.
Supporting Documents: All applications for study permits must be submitted with an extensive list of supporting documents. Countries have different requirements for these documents.
