Professional caregivers are agency or facility-employed and provide specific services like nursing or personal care. Independent caregivers are entrepreneurs who provide in-home care without agency intervention.

Private duty caregivers provide more individualized care, usually involving medical and non-medical support, and are usually employed through private means. To obtain a caregiver position in Canada, you usually require a genuine job offer from a Canadian employer and be eligible for a work permit. Canada has streams such as the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot, through which qualified caregivers can apply for permanent residence upon acquiring work experience. Employers might be required to get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) prior to hiring a foreign caregiver.
