IRCC has started issuing invitations for Parents and Grandparents Program

invitations for Parents and Grandparents

Starting May 21, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is rolling out invitations for Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This year’s initiative aims to approve 20,500 applications for permanent residence, providing a significant opportunity for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their loved ones.

Who is eligible to receive invitations for the Parents and Grandparents Program PGP 2024?

To qualify for the 2024 Parents and Grandparents Program, potential sponsors must meet several specific requirements:

  • Completed an Interest to Sponsor form on the IRCC website in 2020 (but did not receive an ITA in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023),
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act,
  • Be 18 years or older,
  • Be a resident of Canada (possible applicants must present proof of status during the Interest to Sponsor phase).
  • Exceed the minimum income requirement for this program (if married or in a common-law relationship, both the sponsor’s and spouse’s income can be included) deliver proof of income to IRCC, and
  • sign an undertaking to support the sponsor for 20 years financially.

If sponsors do not receive an ITA this year, what can they do?

Bring your parents and grandparents to Canada through the Super Visa. For those who missed the opportunity to submit an interest-to-sponsor form in 2020, there’s no need to worry. Canada continues to facilitate family visits through the Super Visa, offering an alternative avenue for parents and grandparents to experience an extended stay in the country.

The Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years at a time, granting families ample time to create lasting memories together while fostering deeper connections.

In contrast to PGP, sponsors are able to apply for the Super Visa pathway at any time of the year. Within 112 days of receipt, applications submitted under the PGP and Super Visa are processed.

Benefits of the PGP 2024

The Parents and Grandparents Program offers numerous benefits:

  • Family Reunification: Allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada, fostering family unity.
  • Permanent Residence: Sponsored individuals receive permanent residence, granting them access to healthcare, social services, and the ability to work or study in Canada.
  • Long-Term Stability: The 20-year financial undertaking ensures long-term support and stability for the sponsored family members.

The launch of the 2024 Parents and Grandparents Program by IRCC is a significant step towards facilitating family reunification in Canada. With 20,500 applications set to be approved, this program underscores Canada’s commitment to supporting family connections and providing a stable environment for new permanent residents.
