On April 22, 2022, the Minister announced measures to address labor shortages in Canada following:

  • the resumption of Express Entry draws in July 2022
  • a new temporary policy that will give recent international graduates with expiring temporary status the opportunity to stay in Canada longer
  • extending a temporary public policy that allows foreign nationals in Canada as visitors to apply for an employer-specific work permit.
  • policy changes benefiting those who applied for permanent residence via the temporary resident to the permanent resident pathway in 2021

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship says  “There is unprecedented interest in Canada as a destination for newcomers from around the world. A well-run immigration system supports our communities’ futures and allows our industries to tap into essential talent and new business opportunities, so they can continue to grow and remain competitive. We will continue to take steps to strengthen immigration, for the benefit of our businesses, our economy, and all Canadians.”

With unprecedented interest in Canada from applicants around the world, IRCC continues to set the bar higher for immigration processing.

In 2021, Canada set a historic record by admitting more than 405,000 new permanent residents to Canada. The target of the Canadian government for 2022 is to welcome 431,000 permanent residents.
