5900 STEM candidates invited to the new occupation-specific Express Entry draw

STEM candidates

On December 8, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held the second occupation-specific Express Entry draw for STEM candidates and issued 5,900 Invitations to Apply (ITA) to qualified Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professionals.

In round #274, the cut-off score was 481 points, 5 points fewer than the previous draw for STEM candidates.

The tie-breaking rule for this round was November 25, 2023, at 09:48:36 UTC.

As of December 5, 2023, there were 217,370 profiles registered in the Express Entry pool.

This year, Canada issued 106,871 ITAs through the Express Entry draws.

Category-based Rounds of Invitations

Candidates in the Express Entry pool who are eligible for a specific category established by the Minister to meet an identified economic goal are invited in category-based rounds of invitations. Candidates for permanent residence are invited to apply based on criteria such as:

  • The ability to communicate in a specific official language.
  • Work experience in a specific occupation is required.
  • education.
  • Category-based rounds add general and program-specific rounds by inviting top-tier candidates who can contribute to the achievement of these specific economic objectives.

Categories selected for 2023

These categories have been chosen for 2023:

  • Proficiency in French is required.
  • Occupations in healthcare.
  • Jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
  • Occupations in the trades.
  • Transportation jobs.
  • Agriculture and agri-food jobs.

STEM candidates in the occupation-specific Express Entry draws

On May 31, 2023, the Government of Canada launched a category-based selection for Express Entry, allowing IRCC to invite prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training, or language ability.  This year, invitations will focus on candidates with strong French language proficiency or experience in:

  • healthcare,
  • STEM professions,
  • trades,
  • transport,
  • agriculture, and
  • agri-food.

Category-based selection supports Canada’s commitment to welcoming skilled workers into communities nationwide.
