Study Permits

Foreign nationals who want to study in Canada at designated learning institutions (DLIs) must have study permits. To study in Canada, the majority of international students need a study permit. Before applying, make sure you have all the proper documents. Applying is a must before moving to Canada. Canada welcomes more than 130,000 students from foreign countries each year. A study permit allows a foreign national to study in Canada.

Requirements for Eligibility

You can visit Canada to study if you are fully vaccinated. You are enrolled in the Designated Learning Institute (DLI), have a confirmation letter from a recognized educational institution (DLI), a valid ID such as a passport or visa, and you should have enough money to pay your tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation. You have to obey the law and have no criminal record. You should be in good health and be able to get a medical exam. You have to demonstrate to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires. While studying in Canada, you may have responsibilities such as:

Make progress toward completion of your program, abide by any conditions listed on your study permit, and discontinue your study if you no longer meet the requirements.

Depending on your circumstances, your study permit may include conditions such as

  • if you are permitted to work in Canada
  • if you are permitted to travel within Canada
  • the precise date by which you must depart Canada

Eligibility Requirements for the Study Permits

Proof of Acceptance: To apply for a Canadian study permit, you must have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

Proof of Identity: You and each family member accompanying you to Canada must have a valid passport or travel document, as well as two recent passport-size photos when applying for your study permit.

Proof of Financial Support: You must provide documentation proving that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses (housing, food, etc.) for yourself and any accompanying family members for your first year of study.

Letter of explanation:: This letter helps the visa officer understand you and your purpose. It explains why you want to study in Canada and that you are aware of your obligations as a student.
Even if you don’t need a study permit for your program, you should include this letter if you decide to apply for one.

Responsibilities as an International Student in Canada

Students who are studying in Canada have to:

  • Ensure the validity of their study permit. Don’t let it expire! Two to three months before it expires, submit a request for an extension.
  • Take your studies seriously (remain enrolled, attend classes, and make reasonable and timely progress toward completing your degree).
  • Notify the IRCC if you change educational institutions — you need to let them know if you change Designated Learning Institutions. You can accomplish this through your online IRCC.
  • Obey the restrictions on your study permit.

An applicant can work while studying

If you have a study permit, you are eligible to work part-time and are not required to apply for a work permit separately. Additionally, you must confirm that you have a current Social Insurance Number (SIN). Your ability to work ends the moment your study permits expire.
